A 30 ans, Michael Wollny est à la fois un des jeunes pianistes les plus prometteurs de la scène jazz européen et l’un des fers de lance du renouveau d’un jazz allemand longtemps ignoré hors de ses frontières. C’est que, plutôt que de s’inscrire dans une tradition qui se décline de façon souvent uniforme à travers le monde, Wollny a développé une musicalité propre auprès de ses aînés comme de ses pairs. Quand après deux disques en duo avec le saxophoniste vétéran Heinz Sauer et trois avec le trio berlinois [em], Wollny se lance enfin dans l’aventure du solo c’est donc une voix d’une fraîcheur d’inspiration inédite qui se déploie sous ses doigts. Thirty years old Michael Wollny is both one of the most promising pianists on the European jazz scene and one of the groundbreakers of German jazz which has long failed to be acknowledged outside the country. For Wollny avoided following a tradition whose variations show throughout the world tend towards uniformity. He preferred to develop an idiosyncratic musical style while rubbing shoulders with his elders or his peers. After two recordings with Heinz Sauer, the seasoned German sax player, and another three with the Berlin trio [em], Wollny ventures at last into a solo performance; the music emanating from his fingers exudes an enticing novelty.
